The following are some of the accomplishments that dedicated, community volunteers have made through Renaissance Sackville. A large amount of time has gone into these projects, some the result of years of work
2009 - 2011:
♣ Video workshops for local young people - at March Break and mid-summer
♣ Screenprinting workshops for Marshview Middle School students at Little Armadillo Studio
♣ Downtown Beautification Project: Vogue Cinema and Crofter/Tidewater Books
♣ Wellness Expo: Be Strong...Where You Belong and Beyond: Over 35 vendors, 19 demonstrations, activities and presentations, plus children's activities
♣ Local Food Day: An event held in 2009 & 2010 at the Farmers Market to encourage the local production and buying of food. Food security could become a major issue in the future and those communities who know how to feed themselves will be better off
♣ In 2009, the Community Tree Nurseries produced enough small trees to be able to give over 200 of them away to community members in exchange for donations to keep the nurseries going
♣ 2009: a new project was begun next to the Community Garden. Financed by Evergreen and Renaissance Sackville, Community Forests International planted an edible forest garden.
♣ 2009: Bringing the Pieces Together: Developing a Poverty Reduction Plan: Renaissance has got involved in this Provincial Government initiative to try to find creative and effective ways to reduce poverty in New Brunswick.
2006 - 2008:
♣ 2008: Participatory Tools for Building Local and Global Cultures of Peace and Non-violence Workshop: Renaissance sponsored this workshop with Dr. Thomas Mark Turay and Mary Hawa Turay, Co-Founders of the Centre for Development and Peace Education (cdpeace), Sierra Leone, West Africa. ♣ 2008: Two Downtown Beautification projects: the facades of both Joey's Pizzeria and the Wood Block were improved with the help of Renaissance grants
♣ 2008: Moved the Sackville Community Garden from the Drew Nursing Home to its permanent home in Charles Street, thanks to land lent to us by the Town of Sackville
♣ Tree planting project: alliance with John Stuart of Nova Scotia for supply of free trees for Town to be planted by the community; visit to Wolfville to see how their tree planting programme worked; visit by some Trees for Tomorrow committee members to MacPhail Woods to see how a community nursery works; Urban Forestry Installation and Design course in Fredericton
♣ 2007: Community Non-Profit Task Force, set up by Premier Shawn Graham and headed by Claudette Bradshaw, was organized and hosted in Sackville by Renaissance. The Renaissance Executive Director, Janine O'Reilly, was then invited to participate in the reviewing of the report draft before it was presented to the Premier
♣ Establishment of tree nurseries in Sackville in 2007 (Beech Hill and Queens Rd) with the help of funding from Green Streets Canada and the Environmental Trust Fund
♣ Trees For Tomorrow committee: Tree Policy; Sackville Tree Care and Maintenance brochure
♣ Publication of the Sackville Gift Directory (2006 – to encourage shopping locally)
♣ Sponsorship of the Youth Citizen of the Year Award (2004-2009)
♣ Partnership with the Greater Sackville Chamber of Commerce on various projects and fundraising, including Sackville Exposed
♣ Development of a Renaissance Web Site (2007)
♣ Downtown Beautification Project: facade improvements to downtown buildings
♣ GREEN 4 Generations Festival and Trade Fair (2007, 2008)
♣ New Brunswick Environmental Leadership Awards: tree planting award ceremony at the Tantramar Veterans' Memorial Civic Centre
♣ Updating of the Quality of Life Booklet
