LOCAL FOOD DAY:

When: Saturday September 11th, 2010, 9am to 1.30pm

The Sackville Farmers Market will once again be hosting Local Food Day, a day to meet and support those food producers who work within a couple of 100 miles of Sackville. When buying local, one can take comfort in the fact that the food is fresh. It has most likely not been grown with harsh chemicals and preservatives that try to mask the fact that the product has traveled halfway around the world.  Interestingly enough, a lot of the products offered at markets are virtually organic without being certified to advertise this fact.

YOUTH CITIZEN OF THE YEAR AWARD 2009:

Charlotte and Marilla Steuter-Martin:

Nominated by Ron Kelly-Spurles, Charlotte and Marilla Steuter-Martin jointly gained the "Youth Citizens of the Year" award in September 2009.  Both Charlotte and Marilla have been involved in drama activities in Sackville for many years, including with the Live Bait Theatre Young Company and Festival by the Marsh, and have gained a wealth of experience from these undertakings and from other academic and extracurricular activities. This past year, they combined their talents and interests, and through a remarkable display of leadership and artistic ability, produced and directed an outstanding production of "My Fair Lady" at Tantramar Regional High School. I believe this was the first time in many years that a musical was produced at the High School. It became a project that involved and inspired a wide variety of students from all over the school, and also received tremendous community support.

YOUTH ACHIEVEMENT AWARD:

Hyla Lapointe:
This year a second award, the Youth Achievement Award, was given to Hyla Lapointe who was nominated by Heather Longpre. Hyla's contribution to our community include volunteering for the Red Cross on a weekly basis, and being part of SMILE (Sensory Motor Instructional Leadership Experience) which is an organization that takes students to Amherst every Saturday morning to interact and help mentally/ physically disabled children from the ages of 4 to 18. At Mount Allison University she is also involved with the Positive Space program, WarChild Mount Allison and the Judicial Committee.

DECONSTRUCTING DINNER: Talk and discussion with Radio Host Jon Steinman, Tuesday September 29, 2009, at the Wu Centre, Mt A,at 7pm

The media plays a key role in keeping Canadians informed, however, Deconstructing Dinner believes that the most important stories about our food supply are not receiving adequate attention. As a result, we are rapidly losing sight of the most fundamental part of our lives - feeding ourselves.

Deconstructing Dinner reports on current issues throughout the world of food, with a primary focus on local, regional and provincial issues. The show is not restricted to only current affairs, but probes into the processes and actions to which we have all become so accustomed throughout our daily routine, and "deconstructs" them to achieve a more discriminating awareness." LOCAL FOOD DAY: Saturday August 15, 2009, at the Farmers Market on Bridge St, Sackville, NB.

Basically, Local Food Day is a larger version of the Farmers Market with other vendors and organizations in attendance to showcase their products and services. This is an opportunity to show what our community and area have to offer. It is also an educational and marketing opportunity.

Renaissance Sackville is pairing up with the Sackville Farmers’ Market to try to take advantage of the current local food trend and provide an opportunity for local farmers to easily meet consumers.  This initiative has stemmed from the Sackville CSA’s work this spring and aligns well with the CSA’s core values.
